SURGEON’S SKILL GIVES HELPING HAND TO BIKER’S CAREER

TOM   is on the right track when it comes to racing bikes.

Super biker Tom, 22, has been aiming for the British Championships and is determined to gain those valuable points to put him in the lead.

ALL THOSE EFFORTS WERE SHATTERED ONE DAY WHILE PRACTICING AT SNETTERTON WHEN HE LOST TRACTION ON A LEFT HAND BEND.  “The bike flew out from under me”, he explained, “and crashed down on my left hand”.

Tom was rushed to hospital and given a thorough check over and he was okay, although badly shaken, apart from his hand.  “The pain was excruciating”, he recalled.

More x-rays and tests were carried out and Orthopaedic Surgeons were called in.  Tom’s hand was in a mess and biking was certainly out of the question.  “I was in agony”, said Tom, “The medical team were brilliant but all I wanted to do was somehow get back to racing”.

The accident happened at a crucial time of the practice programme, as Tom was only a couple of points behind the Championship Leader, when he crashed.

Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Adrian Chojnowski decided to use a relatively new technique and attempt a painstaking surgical procedure on Tom’s hand.  The operation was a success and Tom was able to return to his racing within 9 weeks.

The Consultant said, “Without researching and developing new techniques, operations like this would not be possible.  We are pleased that Tom could return to his much loved racing career”.
